Briefing

The project is located in the Raigad and Thane districts, Mahrastra, India. The Mantham programme contains: 

A guide for teacher educators, supplementary visual materials, reading materials and worksheets for the evaluation of trainee teachers. 

The implementation of the programme is done through a preliminary meeting with all principals and workshops. Subsequently, teachers conduct regular sessions once a week. 

Avehi means «to know». The Avehi Foundation founded in 1981 is a resource centre of educational materials that supports schools, community organisations, women’s and environmental groups by providing media resources (learning materials) and intervening in formal education to enrich their work, to broaden horizons, to raise the level of education and awareness, promoting the values of equality, justice, gender parity, secularism, environmental sustainability. Avehi founded the Abacus Project in 1990 to make school education more relevant, enjoyable and qualitatively improved, particularly in the field of public education. The Avehi Abacus Project believes in improving and strengthening the public education system to reach out to the marginalised sections of society and to impact mainstream education policy.
